In February last year we were delighted with Cathryn's demonstration entitled The prescription of flowers, we we invited her back.   Her title this time is very intriguing; so what is Hygge? 

Hygge, a Danish notion rooted in the Old Norse word "hugr" meaning mind or consolation and later related to the Norwegian "hugge" for comfort, has long expressed a way of living that values warmth, togetherness and simple pleasures. Traditionally associated with the darker months, hygge naturally finds its fullest expression at Christmas: candles, low lighting, natural greenery and unhurried gatherings all echo historical practices of seeking conviviality and interior comfort in winter, and in recent years the idea has been celebrated and popularised internationally as a blueprint for cosy, meaningful festive seasons.

Cathryn Brown, a NAFAS (National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies) Demonstrator, draws creative inspiration from these hygge principles when designing for Christmas, favouring restrained, tactile arrangements that highlight evergreens, twigs and muted berries. She focuses on tactile textures, warm illumination and simple silhouettes to create displays that promote intimacy and calm, translating hygge’s emphasis on togetherness and thoughtful simplicity into floral demonstrations and seasonal workshops that encourage participants to slow down and savour the season.
